Mikumi National Park is in the southern part of Tanzania and is a convenient place to visit if you are in Dar Es Salaam. It is part of the larger Selous Game Reserve, which is the largest protected wildlife preserve in Africa. This park is home to lion, leopard, cheetah, elephants, giraffes, zebras and 400 species of birds. There is also a large hippopotamus population in this park, which has several pools where they enjoy wallowing.
Many visitors enjoy a short flight or ferry ride to Zanzibar from this location to take in the sun and crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean.
The climate in Mikumi National Park varies from warm to hot and humid, with little change in temperatures through the year. The warmest months are October to March, and the coolest are June to August.
Due to its proximity to Dar Es Salaam and Dodoma, there are numerous lodging options at various price points.
