Rongai Route – The Quiet Northern Trail

Itinerary

The Rongai route is a less popular Kilimanjaro trail and is unique in that the ascent is on the northern slope of the mountain, with the descent being the more common Marangu route. This route is much less crowded and offering solitude, steady climbs, and unique views of Mawenzi, it’s perfect for trekkers seeking a peaceful experience.

Duration: 6 nights/7 days (or 5 nights/6 days)

 

Day 1: Nale Muru → Simba Camp

Day 1 takes you to your first overnight at the Simba Camp (First Cave) (9,300 ft.). The hiking time averages 4 to 5 hours.

Day 2: Simba Camp → Second Cave

On Day 2, you will hike 3 to 4 hours through the heath to the Second Cave Camp (11,300 ft.). 

Day 3: Second Cave → Third Cave

Day 3 is an acclimatization day. Your hike will last 3 to 4 hours, culminating at the Third Cave camp (11,811 ft.).

*Note that Day 3 is the day that you will skip if you opt for the 5-night/6-day hike.

Day 4: Third Cave → Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Day 4 takes you to Mawenzi Tarn Hut (14,160 ft.) after a 3000-ft. elevation gain. Average hiking time on this day is 4 to 5 hours.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Hut → Kibo Huts

Day 5 takes you to your final stop before making the summit. A 6-to-8-hour hike ends at the Kibo Huts (15,430 ft.).

Day 6: Kibo Huts → Gilman’s Point → Uhuru Peak → Horombo Huts

Day 6 is summit day! It begins at midnight, with the objective to reach Gilman’s Point at dawn and Uhuru Peak (19,340 ft.) shortly after sunrise. After a brief celebration of accomplishing this incredible feat, you will descent to Horombo Huts (12,205 ft.), where you will spend the night.

Day 7: Horombo Huts → Marangu Gate → Arusha

Day 7 is the final descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate.  Hiking time averages 5 to 7 hours.
